Criminal Sex Laws in Minnesota
There are five levels of criminal sexual conduct in Minnesota, and most cases are felonies. They generally have one thing in common, sexual contact with someone who didn’t or couldn’t consent to it. Consent may have been lacking because the victim was asleep, refusing, or too young. The level of offense depends on the age of the victim, amount of force, type of contact, and in some cases age difference between the victim and aggressor.
All five levels carry strong risks of jail time, and the higher levels lead to prison. Minnesota uses sentencing guidelines for sex offenses. They determine sentences based on criminal history and severity of the offense. Sex crimes tend to have longer sentences than other offenses.
